Kagen Guided Splitboard Expedition

Lofoten on steroids

When the Alps start turning green but you are still hunting for the white gold, the Arctic alpine playground of Kågen is where you want to be. This is a true, rugged splitboarding adventure packed with all the comfort an alpine rider needs. This expedition is highly couloir-focused, taking advantage of the region’s legendary steep, narrow lines that drop straight into the ocean. Our basecamp consists of classic Norwegian apartments right on the harbor in Skjervøy, complete with full kitchens and a prime setup for evening grilling with uninterrupted fjord views.

Our journey begins at Tromsø Airport (TOS), where we will load our rental cars and gear directly onto the famous Hurtigruten coastal ferry, departing at 18:15. Relaxing on board as we sail through the fjords is the ultimate way to start the trip, arriving at our island base in Skjervøy at 22:15.

Ahead of us lie 6 full guided days exploring the dramatic peaks, hidden basins, and classic couloirs of Kågen and the surrounding Lyngen Alps archipelago. To get the most out of this trip, you should be completely comfortable using boot crampons and managing up to 1,500 vertical meters of climbing per day. You need to be rock-solid on your feet and possess precise, confident board control in steep, unforgiving off-piste terrain.

Arctic spring means endless daylight and massive weather windows, giving us ultimate flexibility to chase the best snow conditions and find the perfect lines. This is a remote, raw destination where the mountains take center stage. When we aren't bootpacking up a couloir or standing on a summit looking down at the ocean, life slows down to the Arctic pace—perfect for hitting the sauna, dropping a fishing line into the fjord, sightseeing across local ferries, or just taking a scenic drive through the jaw-dropping northern landscape.

It’s important to relax and revive after a long day of touring. Our basecamp features warm, cozy traditional Norwegian houses right on the harbor view. It’s walking distance to the nearest supermarket, grill, and local spots. Each day we drive from here with our cars to our touring destination. Each little wooden house accommodates 3-6 people and features its own kitchen. After touring, you can even take a dip in the cold salt water—a perfect way to regenerate your muscles after a long day of touring.

What level of snow- and splitboarding should I have?

You should have significant experience splitboarding in complex alpine terrain, meaning your edge control must be flawless on ice or compact snow, and your kickturn completely rock-solid. Being efficient at descending short rolling or flat sections in ski mode is highly recommended. Because this expedition is heavily couloir-focused, you need to be completely comfortable using boot crampons and managing exposed bootpacks; we will be using this gear to safely access the best steep lines. Each day we will ascend between 800–1,500 vertical meters, which means around 4–6 hours of sustained skinning and climbing. Snowboarding-wise, you must be a confident, precise rider capable of fluidly navigating challenging spring conditions, deep powder, and tight, unforgiving lines on steep slopes up to and exceeding 40 degrees.
